THE RULES.
If you are looking to compete you are expected to show up around 11:30-12:00 for entry registration. You will be given a registration card where you will be able to write down the names of your entries and which categories each entry belongs to. This entry card will be used by the judges to ensure no entries are missed and will be your key to vote in the “BOSS MONSTER” category. Keep in mind that there are 4 total categories. 3 Categories are judged while the fourth is a popularity vote.
The 3 categories that will be judged are:
-Single Model
-Squad
-Scenic (Diorama)
There will also be one public vote category which is called:
-FINAL BOSS (Monsters, Machines, Vehicles)
Entrants will be able to enter all 4 categories if they wish but they must enter different entries for each category.
Single Model Cateogry
This can be any model on a base size up to 100mm. The idea behind this category is to show off your hero models or perhaps small vehicles or monsters you are particularly chuffed about. This category will be judged by a panel and rated on completeness, colour choices (contrasts and harmonies) as well as technical execution.
Prizes
1st:
$70 GC for Out of the Box and a 1st place award.
2nd:
$20 GC for Out of the Box and a 2nd place framed award certificate.
3rd:
A 3rd place framed award certificate.
Squad / Warband Cateogry
The idea of this entry is to have a set of models that are all cohesive together. I'm looking for anywhere from 3-10 models that share cohesion thematically. Models should be on bases no larger than 50mm. This category will be judged by a panel and rated on completeness, colour choices (contrasts and harmonies) technical execution as well as overall cohesiveness. A display base or mini diorama is permitted in this category.
Note: Additional decorative models like an ammo grunt won't be counted as part of the total to allow slight model count overages - these overages will not provide a benefit to your score)
Prizes
1st:
$70 GC for Out of the Box and a 1st place award.
2nd:
$20 GC for Out of the Box and a 2nd place framed award certificate.
3rd:
A 3rd place framed award certificate.
Diorama Cateogry
This entry is intended for those that enjoy the more scenic and storytelling aspects of the hobby. What I'm looking for in this category is to have a general scene that can easily communicate a story. Although emphasis is typically applied to the landscapes in these types of projects, I also want there to be a clearly defined subject that is easily distinguishable by a viewer without any extra verbal prompts from the creator. This category will be judged by a panel and rated on completeness, colour choices (contrasts and harmonies) technical execution as well as the overall scene.
Prizes
1st:
$70 GC for Out of the Box and a 1st place award.
2nd:
$20 GC for Out of the Box and a 2nd place framed award certificate.
3rd:
A 3rd place framed award certificate.
FINAL BOSS CATEGORY
In 2022 I unveiled the grand opening of this category introducing a "King of the Hill" mechanic to the competition. As such I started out as the Final Boss and was dethroned by Braeden with his wonderfully executed entry. Braeden then went on to be Dethroned by Jimmy in 2023. There are some limitations in this category, each entry must be no larger than 14 inches squared. To be clear, length, width and height of the entry may be no larger than 14 inches in either direction. There is also a theme for this category this year which is "Fire" selected by last year's winner Jimmy. This means each entry has to have some sort of underlying “fire” theme to it. It doesn't mean that the whole entry has to be made of flames. For example you can enter a space marine “under fire” from enemies or even a witch with her beloved cat sitting around a campfire. I want to keep this category relatively broad as I know being too restricted can affect artistic ideas from flowing. This category will be publicly voted upon the day of the competition. That means I need to have all entries in before 12:00 P.M. as votes will be cast from 12:01p.m. (assuming no major delays) to 4:00p.m.
Prizes
1st:
$70 GC for Out of the Box and a 1st place framed award certificate.
2nd:
$20 GC for Out of the Box and a 2nd place framed award certificate.
3rd:
A 3rd place framed award certificate and the burning passion to come back next year and beat out first and second place
